Speaker

Dr. Nancy Dyson

University of Delaware

You will be able to learn:

  • Importance of Fractions: their relationship with algebraic learning and how a lack of understanding can limit students' educational and vocational opportunities in mathematical areas.
  • Evidence-Based Intervention: You will learn about a Fraction Sense Intervention (FSI), a methodology specifically designed for sixth-grade students with DM. You will discover how this intervention can be effectively implemented in the classroom.
  • Teaching Strategies: You will explore resources such as the use of number lines, explicit instruction, intentional practice, and meaningful activities that have proven to be effective in teaching fractions. You will understand how the use of pie charts can hinder the concept of fractions and how the authors propose the number line as an alternative.
  • Key Concepts: Key Concepts: You will understand how to teach fundamental concepts of fractions, such as their magnitude, arithmetic calculations, and their applications in real-world situations. Don't miss the free-access material from Dr. Nancy Dyson. here.
